TimeComx: stylish, easy to use timer and task scheduler

Ever wanted your computer to play a sound at a certain time or when a certain time period has lapsed? How about shutting down or locking the computer or even launching a specific app at a particular time?

TimeComX is a small free app that can schedule any task at a set time or when a certain time period has passed. Events include beeping (launching a sound file), running any executable or app you like, or locking/shutting down/logging off/putting your computer in sleep mode etc.

TimeComX can also display your PC’s CPU and network usage.

There are quite a few freeware programs like this one; so, to shed more light on TimeComX here’s here’s a list of pros and cons:

PROS:

Nice, stylish looking interfaceEasy to usePortable: or at least can be. After install, copy the TimeComX folder to your USB or any other location and it will run portably. You can then uninstall the program and use the portable version exclusively, if you want.Can be password locked so it cannot be closed or the timer stopped by your 7-year old when you’re trying to limit his/her computer use (for example)CPU/network usage display is a nice featureFuture/planned features: as they are detailed on their website, are interesting (and include a macro engine and multiple scheduled events).

CONS:

Cannot schedule multiple events at once, although this is a planned feature. Uses approx 16 megs in memory. Which is not a lot these days but I couldn’t help think it could have been smaller. Doesn’t offer a simple, stopwatch-like timer, which I sometimes need.

The verdict: a nice looking and competent scheduler that works really well. Although there are a handful of freeware programs that are similar, TimeComX is an excellent choice, and its list of planned features, when and if it materializes, makes it worth keeping an eye on.

7Conifier: cutomize your Windows 7 taskbar icons en-masse

Do you like to customize your operating system’s look and feel? Do words like “sleek”, “minimalistic”, and “metallic” turn you on? If so then read on: 7Conifier (pronounced “iconifier”) is a free tool that can customize your Windows 7 taskbar and start menu icons by replacing them with any of a number of sleek-looking icon libraries (notably the Token Icon set found on DeviantArt).

7Conifier comes with 3 pre-installed icon libraries, but you could easily add your own or even extend the existing icon libraries to include icons for programs that they might have missed. It also gives you the option to easily revert back to the original icons at any point.

If you’ve read this far then I am assuming that your like the “before and after” image posted above. One more thing to note: you can switch the icons for the taskbar, the start menu, either or both.

Here’s a list of PROS and CONS that pertain to this program:

PROS:

Works well: icons switched within seconds.Offers 3 icon sets to choose from: Token light, Token dark and Eclispe2 (get a glimpse of these in the sidebar of the screenshot to the right).Icon libraries include a wide range of common programs: but will no doubt miss a few of the programs that you have on your machine. If so, you could easily customize the existing icons to cover these or add new ones (see below).Icon libraries editable: in the sense that you could easily assign an icon to any executable, add or remove icons to any of the icon sets (note that you would, of course, have to somehow come up with or create the new icons using external tools).Revert to default icons: 7Conifier can do this in one of two ways; it will save your default icons when it starts allowing you to go back to these at any point, or it can force Explorer to re-load the icons from the files themselves.

CONS

MS Office: my Office 2007 icons didn’t switch over at first, until I removed them and dragged the executables back to the taskbar and re-applied, and that somehow made a difference.The range of apps could have been bigger: because you will probably be surprised that many common ones are missing (e.g. The KMPlayer, Dropbox).

The verdict: if you like this sort of visual tweaking of your OS, you will like 7Conifier. Although still in beta this is a well made program that does exactly what it sets out to do.

Freemake Video Converter updated with cool new features

I recently wrote about Freemake Video Converter, a free, very stylish-looking video conversion program that is both powerful and easy to use (see my original review for more information on this program). Since then, the program has been updated with new features, many of which I had requested in the ’wish list’ of my original review. Specifically, the following features have been added:

MKV, SWF, MPEG as output formatsThe ability for users to determine the desired output file size (and have the program calculate the video bit rate accordingly); see thumbnail to the right.An advanced preset editor that lets you add, modify, and save your own presets.The ability to create DVDs from media files and burn to dual layer DVD’s (which wasn’t supported in the original version I reviewed). Freemake claims to be able to burn up to 20 hours of video to a standard DVD and 40 hours to dual layer DVD’s. All of this with snazzy menus to boot!Subtitle support is in the works, although not yet implemented in the latest version I tested.

We’ve recently seen a blossoming of powerful free video conversion programs, such as Hamster Video Converter, Format Factory, and Xmedia Recode. However, Freemake Video Converter is unquestionably my favorite of the lot. This is because it looks really, really good (although Hamster looks very professional as well), provides the best user experience in my opinion, and provides powerful features and options. It is the only program of all the ones mentioned, for example, that allows the user to set the desired output file size and re-engineers the video bitrate accordingly.

But the real reason I like this program is that it is able to meet the needs of both novice and advanced users alike (although super-advanced users might prefer the infinitesimal control that Xmedia Recode provides).

Suffice it to say if you would like a video conversion program that is simultaneously powerful and easy to use, Freemake Video Converter is the one I would recommend. The only drawback I could think of is that some users may hesitate about installing the required MS Framework 4.0. My suggestion: go for it.

ERUNT GUI: backup and restore your registry with a single click

ERUNT Gui is a free app that can backup and restore the Windows registry. It is a front-end for the well-known registry backup and restoration app ’ERUNT’ but serves to take the command line out of registry backups and replace it with a simple button (see screenshot). It can also be used to setup automatic registry backups on each Windows restart.

The main reason you might want to backup your registry, of course, is as a safeguard against events that might mess up your registry (and, by extension, mess up your PC in general). These could be unanticipated events, such as a malware attack, or otherwise you could backup your registry ahead of testing a program or programs that you are unsure of or that you anticipate problems with, etc.

This program makes registry backup (and restoration) a one-click affair. Here are a few other notes:

One click registry backup and restoration: takes a few seconds.Backup current users or all users: defaults to current user, but “all users” possiblePortable version available: downloadable from the site, although strangely to get the portable version you have to run an installer that creates a portable version within a folder. Note: you will have to go into the “files” folder and find “ERUNTgui.exe”; the shortcut that you may find outside is broken and needs to be discarded.Auto backup on every Windows restart (optional): you could set this up in the settings (see screenshot to the right). You can also set the number of days going back that you would like to preserve backups for.Compatible with Windows Vista, Windows 7: although note that you will need to run the program with administrative privileges. You could do this either by right clicking “run as administrator” on the program executable or shortcut, or modify the program executable permanently (right click properties/compatibility and check “run this program as an administrator” at the bottom or the dialog).Registry optimization: presumably undergoes a registry defragmentation (please correct me in the comments if I am wrong and it does something more). In any case I tested this but it took a long time and pretty much hung my system, forcing me to reboot. Please let me know in the comments section if you had a different experience.

The verdict: a great little backup. Ostensibly, it merely relieves users from having to use the command line interface in using ERUNT; in practice, however, ERUNT Gui in fact makes registry backups (and auto backups) accessible to a much wider audience than they would have been otherwise, to the hands of average users who can now easily protect their systems and guard against all sort of adverse events.

Actions: automate all kinds of repetitive tasks via drag and drop (without writing a line of code)

Actions is a free automation app that can perform a wide range of time consuming tasks quickly and efficiently. Examples of these are limited by your needs and your imagination: renaming files in batch, copying or moving files or folders, resizing and renaming images, backing up specific files or folders, etc. The range of options that Actions supports, I will say, is truly impressive.

This software, inspired by Automator on Mac, is not a macro-recording tool but a kind of graphical user interface where average users can drag and drop the individual steps to build a process that accomplishes a task, without having any knowledge of scripting languages or code. These can then be saved and executed at any time and/or modified later on. It can also create shortcuts that can be launched from the desktop environment without having to open the application first, although these do require that the Actions application be present.

Actions is a multiplatform app and will run on both Windows or Mac.

This program’s name is very appropriate (Actions), because this software is built around the concept of taking a bunch of actions as building blocks and stringing them together to accomplish complex tasks. It is therefore only as good as the actions that it can support, so the question becomes: what kind of actions can it perform? The answer: an impressive array of actions that belong to five general categories: Email, Files and Folders, Images, Internet, Mouse and Keyboard, Text, and Other. In lieu of listing them, I’ve created the image to the right that lists all the possible actions that can be performed in the version I tested.

What can this program do for you? Most anything you can think of. Here are a few examples that are meant to illustrate the kind of thing that is possible:

Resizing images en-masse: say by asking the user to point to a folder, then prompting the user for a theme name, then resizing all of the images found inside as per a standard resolution and renaming them using the theme name given plus a numbered sequence appended to it.Cropping images en-masse: similar to the example above, but instead of resizing say you want to crop a large list of images as per certain coordinates. Can be easily performed in Actions.Renaming files as per certain rules: by asking the user to point to a folder, then renaming all of the files within it according to predefined rules. I actually built this one because I needed it and it works beautifully.Opening a web page and downloading all images: while filtering out all non image URLs.Etc. It’s really up to your imagination; these are just a few by way of illustration.

Here are more notes on this program:

Easy to learn: the learning curve is comparatively small. I was able to create fairly involved tasks just by playing around with the program, without reading any instructions or watching any videos. The program itself will instantly suggest remedies to broken workflows (although these are not always what you might want or intend).Drag and drop: to add actions or to re-arrange them, etc. Very user friendly and goes a long way towards making this application accessible and easy to learn.Executable files: can be easily created. These will launch and perform the task that you created right from the desktop. Unfortunately, you will still need the Actions application itself installed on your machine (it will not run independently). Note that these aren’t “real” executables but rather have the extension “.wexe”.Can run command line executables: with parameters. This implies that given the right command line executable you can add any action to the program. For example, if you have an exec that can convert video files you can integrate video conversion into your Actions workflows.Can send mouse clicks and keystrokes: if you need them (yes, if you must have the macro functionality and look and feel, you can).Developers can author their own actions: in Java, if they so choose.

Wish list (or how this program can be even better)

More actions: specifically video conversion ones (hey this is a wish list after all), and an unrar option in addition to the currently available unzip. Note, however, that if you must have these now all your need to do is found a command line executable that can do it, as mentioned above.Filling online forms: an action or actions designed to fill online forms and/or enter logins and passwords.The ability to package your workflows into true executables: that can run independently of the Actions application, would be great.The option to launch workflows from the context menu: say, via an “Actions” context menu entry that can house various workflows.

The verdict: Actions will invariably be compared to such automation apps as AutoHotkey and AutoIt, but, in my opinion, this is somewhat of an oranges and apples comparison. Actions’ emphasis on dragging and dropping makes it accessible off the bat to a much wider audience, and completely circumvents any need for scripting or coding. There’s no syntax to learn and no libraries or functions to deal with; the experience is closer to building a Lego than writing code, although you will need to figure out the logic and think like a programmer.

Note that Actions is also specifically pitched towards developers as presenting opportunities to expand the market for their software. For more on this go here.

I’ve been playing with this software for a couple of days and I just love it. The developers have done an astounding job making this software both powerful and accessible. They also provide resources on the Actions site for both laypersons and developers, including this video introduction and tutorial.

Find and Run Robot: a brilliant search-box style launcher and task management app

Find and Run Robot (FARR) a free “search box” style launcher similar to previously mentioned Launchy. These kinds of programs scan certain locations on your hard drive, including your start menu, and provide a floating search box that pops-up on demand to display matching results for programs and files as you type into them.

But FARR is not just a launcher. With its open architecture, FARR is extensible through plugins that allow it to perform all sorts of tasks and to function as an all-in-one interface for many other apps. You can use it, for example, as a front-end to desktop search app “Everything” (a favorite of mine), to perform on-the-fly internet searches, to manage your “Remember the Milk” account from the desktop, or even to perform spelling and thesaurus lookups on-the-fly from within any program, just to name a few of the functions you can add to it.

In fact, FARR has slowly emerged with a distinct, hard to duplicate advantage over similar programs (like Launchy), and that is simply the community of coders that use it and develop plugins for it, that enable it to perform the kind of tasks mentioned above and a whole lot more.

The verdict: this is one post where I will start with the verdict, which I usually reserve until the end. There are two things I want say about this program to sum it up:

(1) If you are unfamiliar with search-box style launchers like FARR and Launchy, you’re in for a treat. Once you try these, they will literally transform the way you use your computer. Just imagine: instead of hunting in your start menu or other locations for a shortcut, all you need to do is start typing the first few letters of the program name, and it will popup. (Very useful if you have a large folder full of portable programs, like I do, that never make it to the start menu).

(2) FARR is likely the best program of it’s kind. It has come a long way since I first saw it many years ago; for one thing, it has undergone a face ift that brought about the “wow” factor which Launchy had from the start.

But the real, difficult-to-replicate edge it has over other programs like it is the community over at Donationcoder which has embraced it and continuously develops plugins for it that enable it to perform a wide range of tasks. Some of the ones I like (and which I have mentioned above): a plugin for “Everything” desktop search, a Remember the Milk desktop management plugin, a plugin for clipboard-based spelling and thersaurus checks, etc.

I will not say too much more about FARR plugins (instead, look for my upcoming post untitled “My Favorite FARR plugins” — leave suggestions in the comments), but I will say that the sophistication of this program and the plugins that are available for it make it a must have tool. It will also most likely replace Launchy in the next update of my Freeware Top 30.

More notes on this program: How to use: press a keyboard shortcut (the Pause key by default but can be user defined) and the FARR search dialog will appear on screen. Start typing and it will display matches in a list that are ranked based on an (editabe) scoring scheme. You can then access the results using the mouse or arrow buttons, by pressing enter, or by pressing various hotkeys (numbers with keyboard modifiers such as ALT, for example).Performing tasks: is done via commands (referred to as aliases). For example, you could type “search Freewaregenius” in the FARR searchbox and FARR will give you a choice of 8 or so search engine search for that term (Freewaregenius), with Google being the default. You could also create your own aliases, for example FF to run Firefox, or define an alias that lists a whole bunch of your favorite folders or apps, etc.FARR can also take folder paths as input, and with its quick filtering by extension or wildcard, can function as a Windows explorer replacement of sorts.Indexing: FARR, in fact, does not index folders but rather performs real-time searches (unlike Luanchy). It still manages excellent responsiveness and performance and moreover never needs to rebuild its index.Scoring: like Launchy, FARR scans a pre-defined collection of folders. Users can add to these (or remove them from the list) but, additionally, can give each a score which can influence the importance of its contents in terms of appearing on the results lists. As with folders, file extensions can be scored in order to influence FARR’s behavior. For example, give *.mp3 a high score to boost FARR’s actions as a music desktop search engine, if that’s something you might want, etc.Memory usage: offers 3 levels of memory use, minimal (not recommended), average (at about 11 megs in memory or so), and a faster-running option weighing in at 16 megs or so, which I would personally recommend.

Pasteboard: your disposable 10-page scratchpad

Pasteboard is a free 10-page tabbed “scratch pad” type program that provides space to type in or paste any text that you might need, whether it’s pasting coupon codes from the internet, quickly jotting down an email address or a phone number, grabbing some code to embed on your site later, writing down a few thoughts, or holding text while you cut, copy. and paste between programs, etc.

This program is different from many notes programs in that it does not have tags or outlines; and aside from labeling the tabs it does not have any kind of scheme to store or categorize information, and is not designed to display on-screen notes or reminders. It also does not have editing or formatting options; all it offers are 10 tabs on top marked one through ten, and a white page for each to store your transient bits of text.

But here’s the interesting part: it actually is extremely useful. After using it for about 2 weeks now it remains on my taskbar and I find myself using it over and over.

So, you’ve got a computer that you’re using, but look around your desk; chances are there’s a paper pad and pen somewhere, and chances are that that paper pad is full of scribbles, phone numbers, email addresses, random lists, etc.

What Pasteboard does is replicate that “disposable” pad digitally and, strangely, it does a good job.

More notes on this:

Portable: unzip and run. The text files are stored in the same folder Actually, not portable. See comments below.Stores notes in text files: titled page01.txt through page10.txt. You cannot add additional pages or tabs.You can label tabs: if you want to (see screenshot above). Just put your mouse on a tab and right-click settings.Auto save: all text is saved automatically on exit.

The verdict: very handy little app that performs a very useful function without a lot of complexity. You may be interested in this app even if you have a sophisticated notes program or a clipboard manager, if only because of the “disposable” nature of its uses. Just look around, if you see a lot of random papers with bits and pieces of info on your desk you will probably like it. Reminds me of previously mentioned Flashnote, but is more straightforward.

If you ever wonder whether video games will eventually become an art form in their own right then you have to check out this free game. ’Today I die’ is a downloadable flash game that has been described as an "interactive poem", a poetic game, and a playable piece of artwork, just to mention a few.

Just like in art, the ’rules’ are not spelled out, and there is no explicit objective, which is NOT to say that nothing happens in the game. There is a structure and there is a narrative/storyline. However, you do get the sense that there are different routes that you can take that can lead to different end results. In other words, that there are multiple ways of playing the game, all of which are equally valid.

The gameplay dynamics involves moving your little sprite around the tiny 8-bit environment, interacting with objects and creatures, as well as the words on the top of the screen and other words that occasionally appear below. In this game, you are expected to experiment try different things in order to come to grips with the game dynamics.

I first learned about this game after seeing a 99 cent iPhone app that was made of it. If there’s one thing that you need to know about this game it is the following: it’s easy and not too complicated. "Today I die" is in fact a casual game that can takes a few minutes to play, and will not keep you engaged for weeks. However, the concept and game dynamics are very pleasant, and the exploration provides good, quick entertainment, if only for a few minutes.

The verdict: Haozip is a full-featured archive manager which is powerful and easy-to-use. It has a good-looking interface and offers some built-in handy tools. Although it doesn’t support too many archive formats, I believe that it is still one of the best free archiving managers out there.

Set first your own unlock pattern by connecting some of the nine white dots together (There is a default unlock pattern pre setted). When you try to unlock your phone, you need to draw the same pattern exactly as you set.
You can also protect your side bar slider key -- double click the menu key to lock the phone. When the phone is locked, single click the menu key to show you the lock screen with large time display, if you only want to glance at the time, signle click the menu key again to turn off the light to save the battery!

AltRun: lightweight application launcher

AltRun is an open-source, lightweight launcher that launches applications, documents, and folders with just several keystrokes. This software also provides the flexibility to perform a wide range of tasks; examples of these include, but are not limited to, quickly running web searches, controlling on-screen windows, sending e-mails, and shutting down, restarting, suspending or hibernating the computer.
AltRun is somewhat different from other popular launchers, for example, Launchy and FARR. AltRun does not search for applications or documents in specific folders, but in a list of user-defined shortcuts. In this way, AltRun presents the results quickly with minimum memory use. AltRun has some helpful built-in shortcuts and you can add yours to the list in various ways. For example, you can drag and drop the application or document onto the built-in shortcut manager or use the “Send to” menu to create your own shortcuts.

AltRun is invoked/dismissed by a hotkey (Alt + R or Pause by default). Before you type anything, you can launch the default 10 shortcuts using the 0~9 number keys. If the item you seek is not among these 10 shortcuts, just start typing the first letters of the shortcuts and the results appear instantly. Hit enter or space to launch the top result.
Shortucts in AltRun are not limited to applications, folders and documents, but can perform many other jobs. For example, you can create a shortcut called “gmailto” with the command line (https://mail.google.com/mail/?fs=1&view=cm&shva=1&to=%p),where %p represents the parameter and will be replaced by what you type in a text box that will appear after you launch the shortcut. Now, you can simply invoke AltRun and type “gmailto” and hit enter, then type the e-mail address to which you want to send an e-mail and hit enter again. Now you can start writing an e-mail in Gmail to the address you have typed.

Pros:

Wish list:
Creating shortcuts in batch: when you have tons of installed applications and lots of files to work with, the process of creating shortcuts is really tedious and boring. I hope AltRun can scan a folder and create shortcuts in batch just in the way Launchy indexes a folder.Better shortcut manager: which can manage the shortcuts by categories would nice.Fix some visual glitches on Windows 7: where the bottom of the launcher appears truncated.
The verdict: Overall, this program is good. It is extremely lightweight and does more than what I expected a simple launcher like this can do. Creating shortcuts may be a little time-consuming, but it will be fine if you don’t have a lot of applications to run. But with a great number of applications and documents on my computer, I would stick with FARR. I really wish AltRun could create shortcuts in batch.
